Antique Saint Nick Glass Indent Christmas Ornament, German Long Stem Bishop Ornament
Striking hard to find super deep large indent ornament with long stem pike, tinsel wire wrap, and a full color Saint Nicholas the Bishop paper scrap! Circa 1940s, Germany.
A silver sphere holds the very deep starburst radial indent. It is gorgeous, reflecting light that radiates from the deep red and gold center. This is one of the deepest indents we have come across, indicative of its age. The inside rays recede to the back wall of the ornament, so pretty. It is trimmed with white mica around the rim with a band of mica wrapping around the back. A small pontil is at the bottom, indicative of a mouth blown ornament, not from a mold.
The long pike stem is framed with a triple band of crinkle tinsel wire and is finished with a bow at the top. A handsome bearded Saint Nicholas litho scrap is set in the center of the stem. It is finished with a simple hanging loop at the top.
It measures a tall 4.75 inches to the top of the loop and the sphere is 2 inches wide. The bishop scrap measures 2.25 inches by 1.25 inches. It is in excellent, mint condition free of chips, cracks, and minimum mica loss. The paper scrap is clean and free of creases or tears, the colors still crisp and bright. Wow!
What a wonderful and unique antique long stem indent glass ornament. These are so beautiful and super hard to find!
SIDE NOTE: Saint Nicholas was a Christian bishop who helped the needy. After his death, the legend of his gift-giving grew. Saint Nicholas transformed into the legendary Santa Claus, who brings Christmas presents to children around the world.
