1890s Antique Dome Cap German Blown Glass Teardrop Venetian Dew Christmas Ornament
Hard to find early German blown glass ornament with lovely Venetian dew accents and a conical dome cap, circa 1890s.
What makes this ornament so unique is its original plastered metal cap! Prior to the spring cap, metal ornament caps were adhered by hand with a sealing wax blend, a very time consuming and tedious process. (The spring cap was invented in the very early 1900s, which is the familiar stye that is still in use today.)
This unique striped teardrop ornament features bright gold and pink bands over silver with a long fat pontil at the bottom. The center silver stripe has a bit of bumpy ground glass texture which reflects the light beautifully. The wide bands are framed with thinner gold stripes at the top and bottom. It is topped with the period conical dome cap. It measures 3 inches tall and is in very good antique condition free of chips or cracks. There is a bit of age related paint loss, and Venetian dew loss on one side.
It is a very rare ornament in amazing condition, especially for its age at over 125 years old! A fabulous addition to any antique ornament collection, a very thoughtful gift for the collector of fine Christmas ornaments.
