1890s Dome Cap German Jumbo Triple Floral Star Indent Glass Teardrop Ornament
Lovely, hard to find extra large triple indent teardrop ornament with a scarce metal dome cap, circa late 1890s Germany.
What makes this ornament so rare and unique is its original plastered metal cap which is often referred to as a conical or dome cap. Prior to the spring cap, metal ornament caps were adhered by hand with a sealing wax blend, a very time consuming and tedious process. (The spring cap was invented in the very early 1900s, which is the familiar stye that is still in use today.)
It is a delicate jumbo teardrop shape, made of super thin glass typical of this time frame. Three lovely large floral star indents circle the form and thin white stripes frame the indents at the top and bottom. The dome cap is securely attached at the top. It is in very good antique condition free of chips or cracks. There is some minor paint loss and an area with a bit of wax drippings, from the very early days of lit candles on the tree. We have left the wax as is, a part of its history!
It is a handsome and striking large early ornament at over 125 years old! A fabulous addition to any antique ornament collection, a very thoughtful gift for the collector of fine Christmas ornaments.
