1890s RARE German Dome Cap Hexagon Ornament SIX Indents, Bumpy Glass Christmas Ornament
Extremely rare and unique antique German Christmas ornament with SIX indents and a scarce metal dome cap, circa late 1890s Germany.
Besides the large number of indents and silver tinsel trim, what makes this ornament so rare and unique is its original plastered metal cap! Prior to the spring cap, metal ornament caps were adhered by hand with plaster, a very time consuming and tedious process. (The spring cap was invented in the very early 1900s, which is the familiar stye that is still in use today. )
It is beautifully embossed with different bumpy radial patterns which frame the six star floral indents. The center band is framed with thin strands of silver tinsel, another hard to find feature adding to its uniqueness. The top and bottom panels are lobed and also feature bumpy patterns. It is finished with a long, thick pontil where the glass blower ended. Wonderful!
It measures 2.75 inches tall to the top of the cap by 2 inches wide. The silvering is still quite strong after all these decades and it is in superb condition free of chips, cracks, or breaks. The tinsel is thin in a couple of small spots, but minor. We show all sides of this special ornament.
It is a beautiful and quite rare ornament in amazing condition, especially for its age at over 125 years old! A fabulous addition to any antique ornament collection, a very thoughtful gift for the collector of fine Christmas ornaments.
