Antique Figural Glass Dog Ornament German, Frosted Begging Dog with a Purse, 1900s
Wonderful very early antique German figural glass ornament, featuring a sweet begging dog with a purse in his mouth. Rare Venetian dew ornament, circa 1900s.
This special ornament is featured on page 27 of John Lightner’s Christmas Rarities- Rare Antique German Glass Ornaments, 2007 edition. It’s official name is, “Begging Dog with a Purse” and had a value up to $175 back then. Wow!
This handsome old ornament features realistic molded details the Germans are known for. The glass is very thin and fine, typical of this early era of ornament making, where each ornament was individually blown by mouth into a highly detailed mold. The sweet dog is in the classic sitting-up begging pose, holding a purse in his mouth! It is covered in Venetian dew sprinkles, with the collar, purse, and mouth originally painted a red color. Mercury glass versions are more common, so this Venetian dew dog is a real treat to find!
It measures 3.75 inches tall and is in very good antique condition, free of chips or cracks. The pike is intact and topped with its original metal hanging loop. There is a bit of dew loss and the red paint has faded, typical of an ornament of this age over 120 years!
This German begging dog ornament will make a nice addition to any figural ornament collection or display, a special gift for the antique German ornament collector!
