1900s Antique Large Clip On Bird Christmas Ornament 7″ Multi Color German Songbird

Very early large antique German blown glass clip on songbird Christmas ornament. It is a beautiful multi-colored bird which sits on a very old antique clip that opens to the back! Circa 1900s-1920s.

The glass is very thin and fine, typical of this early era of German glass ornament making. It is very hard to find these old ornaments that include this particular scallop clip. The later clip bird ornaments opened towards the head, with earlier ornaments opening to the back as this one does.

It is simply wonderful, featuring a silver body with red and gold wings and a red cap head. A lovely wash of light turquoise blue is on the breast and down the back. The black beak tip still has the tiny ball of glass where the glass blower ended. Wow! The bird is highly sculptural with finely molded feather and wing details. The tail feathers are the original spun glass which have aged to a silvery gray color.

It measures 7 inches wide, beak tip to tail end. The blown glass body is 4.5 inches wide. The original spring legs and clip are intact. The large metal clip is fancy and ornate, with a rounded scallop fan shape. It is in excellent antique condition, the colors still bright and crisp free of paint loss. There is a chip on the tail end, and there are a few small minor oxidation spots. Please view all of the detailed photos to appreciate this very old ornament.
