1900s Antique Large German Clip On Bird Christmas Ornament, Cockatiel Parrot Blown Glass Bird

Very early antique German blown glass clip on cockatiel bird Christmas ornament, in a rare large size and lovely coloring. It is a beautiful and delicate bird, circa late 1890s to early 1900s.

This is a very special and scarce antique vintage figural glass bird ornament. It is very hard to find these old ornaments that include this particular clip. The later clip bird ornaments opened towards the head, with earlier ornaments opening to the back as this one does.

It is simply wonderful, deeply molded and highly detailed which these early ornaments are known for. The bird is very sculptural with layers of feather and wing details. The large silver body has washes of pastel green and pink on the wings and breast. It has a beautiful curved crown on its head and a black beak. The curly crown is super fine and thin, the point tip still has the tiny ball of glass where the glass blower ended. Wow! The tail feathers are the original spun glass which have aged to a silvery gray color.

It measures 7.5 inches, crown tip to tail end. The blown glass body is 5 inches. The large metal clip is fancy and ornate, with a pointed scallop fan shape which is quite rare and indicative of its age. The spring legs are quite unique, comprised of one long spring which was bent into a “U” shape and inserted through two holes in the top clip plate. This is very rare, as usually there are two springs. This is another indication of the early age of this fine antique ornament. It is in excellent antique condition, the silvering strong, bright and crisp. It is free of chips or cracks, with the usual age related oxidation at the tail end and a couple of small spots.
