1920s Antique German Clip On Bird Christmas Ornament, Patriotic Songbird Bumpy Glass Bird
Very striking antique German blown glass clip on songbird Christmas ornament, silver with red, white, and blue accents. It is a hard to find large bumpy bird which sits on a very old antique clip! Circa early 1920s.
The bird is highly sculptural with an all over bumpy texture and finely molded feather wing details. The pointed beak tip still has the tiny ball of glass where the glass blower ended. Wow! The beak, cap, and wing tips are bright red. Stunning blue wings are at the front of the bird, with two horizontal white stripes on the back. The tail feathers are the original spun glass.
It measures 6 inches wide, beak tip to tail end. The blown glass body is 4.25 inches. The original spun glass tail and spring legs are intact. The large metal clip is fancy and ornate, with a serrated scallop fan shape which is quite rare and indicative of its age. The spring legs are quite unique, comprised of one long spring which was bent into a “U” shape and inserted through two holes in the top clip plate. This is very rare, as usually there are two springs. This is another indication of the early age of this fine antique ornament.
It is in excellent antique condition free of chips, cracks, or paint loss which is amazing for its age. The colors are still bright and crisp with the usual oxidation at the tail end.
What a beautiful antique German songbird Christmas ornament. It is quite rare with the antique clip and the unique spring legs. A must have for any antique German or figural Christmas ornament collection. A thoughtful gift for the bird lover!
