Antique Celluloid Embossed Mini Bell Ornaments Lot of Six, Early Japan Ornaments 1930s
Very early set of small Japan celluloid bells, a six piece lot each embossed with a different design including a Santa Head! Circa mid-1920s to early 1930s.
These are quite hard to find, and are so delightful in their subtle lightly embossed design features. From left to right in our photos there is a gold fluted Bell, a red Santa Head, a light purple Angel figure, a silver Santa Head, a red Monkey, and a silver ringed Bell. They measure one inch tall and are unmarked. All have small metal hanging loops attached at the top and are in good antique condition showing age related light wear and some paint loss. These are nearing 100 years old!
Celluloid was the first semi-synthetic plastic, a very exciting new material developed in the mid 1800s. This is a must-have set of early Japan celluloid ornaments to add to your plastic Christmas collection!
SIDE NOTE: Amongst serious ornament collectors, debates are still held as to who made these and what era they originate from. These were found in the bottom of a box of 1920s Christmas ornaments, amongst a huge lot of antique Christmas from this same time period. When looking closely, the Santa appears to have slight Asian characteristics. Japan first started making Christmas ornaments for the American market in the mid-1920s, so we believe these are from that time period.
