Antique Glass Christmas Ornament ‘Smitty’, 1920s Figural German Comic Strip Ornament

Hard to find early German figural ornament depicting the comic strip character “Smitty” from the 1920s. Excellent!

Smitty was a newspaper comic strip created in the early 1920s by Walter Berndt. Many of the popular 1920s figural ornaments were made after comics, actors, and famous personalities. He is a nicely molded molded glass Christmas ornament in wonderful condition. Featured on page 107 of John Lightner’s “Christmas Rarities- Rare Antique German Glass Ornaments”, 2007 edition. Fabulous!

The strip featured young office boy Smitty, a round‐faced youth whose trademark was a bow tie and a cap. This is the classic Type I style of Smitty with his oversized head and tall size at 4.5 inches tall to the top of the unmarked metal cap. He wears bright yellow pants and cap, holding his hands in his pocket.

The ornament is in excellent antique condition free of chips or cracks, the silvering still very strong. There is a bit of minor age related paint loss on the face. Our photos show all sides of this fun and rare ornament. He’s a must-have for any antique German or figural Christmas ornament collection. A very thoughtful and unique gift!
