Antique Tinsel Scrap German Ornament Angels, Large 10″ Antique Paper Tinsel Ornament, 1900s

Fabulous extra large early 1900s German tinsel and paper scrap ornament, featuring sweet boy and girl angels playing a harp in the clouds!

This is an amazing antique Victorian Christmas ornament, featuring lovely high quality litho printing that the Germans are known for. It is a huge tinsel and paper ornament, measuring 10 inches from the top tinsel loop to the bottom, and 5 inches wide. The pretty blonde angel on the left holds a banner. The boy angel on the right is playing the small lap harp. They have highly detailed cherub-like faces and dainty little hands. Both wear flowing robes and angel wings. They sit in the clouds of heaven as they play their Holy music. There is a large silver tinsel wire loop on the top, and two of different sizes on the bottom. The center features a wonderful silver tinsel spray.

This superb German tinsel paper ornament is in very good antique condition considering its age, well over 120 years old! The pastel colors are vibrant and crisp. The lead tinsel is still sparkly, even more so than the photos show. The tinsel spray at the bottom has some minor oxidation. The tips of the wings have gone missing over the decades, but minor. What a fabulous antique paper tinsel Christmas ornament, hard to find in this extra large size!

This wonderful antique paper ornament was part of a 1990s Smithsonian display! We purchased this from the collection of Robert Brenner, well known Christmas historian and author. He told us, “In the early 1990s, I curated three exhibits in separate years at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. This is from the exhibit on Christmas through the Decades, and this ornament was used on the 1890s feather tree.” That is some wonderful provenance!
