Vintage Corning Unsilvered Large Bell Tinsel Inside RARE US of A Glass Ornament 1940s

Wonderful American made unsilvered wartime Christmas ornament, a pretty tinted lobed bell with silver tinsel inside! These type of ornaments were made for a very short period of time, circa early 1940s.

It features transparent glass with a lovely coating of light gold stain or paint. Two white stripes round the form. Ornaments of this era were not silvered inside due to wartime restrictions. Thus, a long silver tinsel spray was inserted to give it sparkle and shine. The classic bell shape has a lobed bottom and a large fat pike.

It measures 3 inches tall to the top of the original scalloped cap and is in very good vintage condition free of chips or cracks. There is a bit of paint loss to the stripes and the cap is oxidized.

This is a wonderful 1940s USA unsilvered bell with tinsel Christmas ornament, a great addition to any war era ornament collection!

SIDE NOTE: Metallic mercury glass ornaments get their shine from being coated on their interior with a silver nitrate solution. In 1940, WWII wartime shortages restricted this material, and ornaments during this time frame were produced without silvering. Since unsilvered ornaments were less popular than the shiny mercury glass, they are harder to find and thus more collectible.
