RARE Vintage German Double Free Blown Figural Glass Ornament Cat on a House
Very, very rare antique double free blown glass ornament, a black cat on top of a cottage rooftop, circa 1940s, Germany.
This is an amazing, very unique German double ornament and it’s in fabulous condition. A highly detailed silvered glass cottage is covered in mica snow with bright magenta accents. There is so much detail to the big fir tree, numerous windows, and roof tiles. The sweetest free blown black cat sits on top of the roof, looking right at you with bright hand painted gold eyes. There are additional hand painted spot decorations on the cat as well. It has fun pointed ears and the cutest swirling curved tail! The assembled ornament is 4.5 inches tall to the top of the cap. The house itself measures 2.5 inches tall and the cat is 2 inches. This fine ornament is in excellent antique condition free of chips, breaks, or cracks. There is almost no mica or paint loss. Amazing!
This German double Christmas ornament is so hard to find, a must have for any antique German or figural Christmas ornament collection. We have never seen one like it. There is an ornament similar in style mentioned in Lightner’s rare ornament book, a chimney sweep on top of a cottage.
SIDE NOTE: Free blown ornaments were made without a mold, blown by the artist and shaped with a paddle. This technique was very time consuming, thus, these ornaments are much more rare than the classic mold blown figurals and are one of a kind.
