1890s Dome Cap Antique German Blown Glass Ornament, Fish Carp Christmas Ornament
Wonderful very early antique German figural blown glass fish Christmas ornament with period conical cap! Circa 1890s-1900s
This is an early light silver and gold carp fish ornament. The carp has been a dominant Christian Christmas symbol since the mid 1800s when figural ornaments started to decorate the family Christmas trees. It represents good blessings and abundance, as well as the Christian faith.
It features a deeply molded design, showing graduating sizes of fish scales, gills, multiple fins, and a pointed mouth which indicates the carp species. The glass is very thin and fine, typical of this early era of German glass ornament making.
It measures 3 inches wide to the end of the cap. The silvering is still very strong with a wash of light gold in the center with bright red fins and mouth. The pike acts as the tail and is intact, finished with the original conical dome style cap complete with hanging ring.
This wonderful antique glass fish ornament is in excellent condition free of chips, cracks, or silvering loss. There is a bit of the usual oxidation at the tail end. What a fabulous addition to your vintage antique figural Christmas ornament collection!
