Antique German Figural Character Christmas Ornament Moon Mullins Kayo, 1920s Comic Strip
Hard to find early German figural ornament depicting the Moon Mullins comic strip character “Kayo” from the 1920s. Excellent!
Many of the popular 1920s figural ornaments were made after comics, actors, and famous personalities. Moon Mullins was a Chicago newspaper comic strip created in the early 1920s by Frank Willard. It appealed to working-class authenticity, depicting the lives of diverse lowbrow city characters. Kayo was Moon’s street urchin kid brother with his sad face, hands in pockets with big bow scarf around his neck. Featured on page 107 of John Lightner’s “Christmas Rarities- Rare Antique German Glass Ornaments”, 2007 edition. Fabulous!
He measures 3 inches tall to the top of the unmarked Lauscha style metal cap. The ornament is in good antique condition, nicely molded with some silvering loss. There is a chip on the pike shown in our detail photo.
This hard to find Moon Mullins Kayo comic strip ornament is a must-have for any antique German or figural Christmas ornament collection. A very thoughtful and unique gift!
